At the heart of the series Poetry of Transience lies an understanding that human beings are not separate from nature. We are nature itself, subject to the same laws of transformation, vulnerability and disappearance. The series does not attempt to represent a relationship between people and nature as two distinct entities. It explores a more essential truth: that the human body, with all its sensitivity, limitations and transience, is one of nature’s forms. The cycles that shape trees, flowers, water and wind also shape us. Our bodies carry seasons, memory, scars and time.
The title Poetry of Transience reflects the central question of the project. Human life is brief, yet we often move through the world as if time were infinite. We forget that our presence on this planet is fragile and temporary, no different from the fleeting life of a flower.
The series invites a deeper awareness of transience not as a source of despair, but as a source of attention and presence. If we were truly conscious of the brevity of our lives, perhaps we would inhabit each moment more fully. We might become more attentive to the beauty of the present, more compassionate toward one another, and more aware of the responsibility we carry within the short time we share on this Earth.
This understanding resonates strongly with the words of former astronaut Ron Garan, who reflected on the experience of seeing Earth from space: “We’re not going to have peace on Earth until we recognize the basic fact of the interrelated structure of all reality. ...what happens to one directly affects all of us indirectly. That we are all inextricably linked together in this fabric of life that we call Earth.”
If we lived in constant awareness of our own transience, what kind of people would we become?
Would the world around us grow closer to poetry?
a dream of freedom –
flight is growing in the birds
rising above mountains

hope for life –
a bare tree beneath its bark
keeps memory of a flower

to the deaf traveler
into a dream the birds pour
the songs of gods

made of a dream –
beneath our ribs
the same water flows

returning to the sky –
the rays of the last sun
on the wings of birds

celestial maps –
hidden paths lead
to the distances within

the first frost falls –
a roof made of our palms
defies the wind

cherry in bloom –
from the winter there remains
only a cold palm

under the eyelids, salt
not tears – just water for
the future flowers

golden meadows –
onto my hands falls the shadow
of the last flower

night conversation –
a wolf in the treetop reveals
the birth of the moon

traces of moonlight –
with the first step the traveler discovers
a hint of light

dancing with the wind –
with our fingertips we touch
the tips of light

traces of the sea —
strands of hair flutter
flags of salt

travelling through meadows –
into our hands the wind
places distances

distancing –
in a sunbeam on the pillow
silence shines

twilight in the field -
the moon completes
its final full circle.

summer solstice —
the first freckle on my nose
summer's kiss

with bare branches
the trees struggle with the bora
victims fly south

field of wildflowers –
boundless landscapes
grow out of me

end of October –
a memory of hands from
the other side of the world

the scent of immortelle –
all of our summers pressed
into a herbarium
